Farmers markets in Carroll are open for the summer, making it the season to enjoy fresh, homegrown local produce.

“This has been a good growing year. Last year was a difficult year. Farmers had to irrigate or, if they didn’t, they watched their crops whither away,” said Gabe Zepp, agriculture and development specialist for the county.

The Downtown Westminster Farmers’ Market is selling a cookbook this year, “Simply in Season,” which features recipes for items you can find at the farmers market. A children’s version of the book is also for sale, and the profits will benefit market projects.

Trade-ins up, trade-in values down

To deal with record gas prices, many people are trading in their sport utility vehicles and pickups for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, according to area car dealerships. However, trade-in values have dropped significantly. An influx of trade-ins began about six or seven months ago, and have steadily increased along with the price of gas, said Dave Kapper, sales manager at Heritage of Westminster.

Ron Howard, certified sales manager at Koons Westminster Toyota, agreed that more and more people are looking to get rid of their gas-guzzling vehicles.

Unfortunately, many car owners are surprised by the trade-in value of their vehicles, Kapper said.

“Trade-in value is thousands less than what the Kelley Blue Book says,” Kapper said.

The guys of [T]aneytown are back for a third Carroll County area tour since fall 2006.

The group has played four shows since arriving in town last Wednesday, and plans on playing four more before heading back overseas. Not only have they been busy playing for crowds at the Taneytown Tavern and the Carroll Arts Center, but they also just inked their first record deal with CoraZong Records, a Dutch-based record company with an American office in Nashville. Corazong also represents Willie Nelson, along with other up-and-coming acts.

“It’s a dream come true basically,” said lead guitarist and songwriter Joost Prinsen. “I mean, this is what you’re working on ever since you start making music. What you want to do is make an album that’s going to get noticed.”

Some people say they don’t have the time to do it. Some people may be intimidated by the thought of doing it.

The health benefits of physical activity are have been widely researched and are nearly indisputable, but despite the facts, there are still many people who don’t exercise.

Physical activity has numerous benefits, including lowering the risks of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Area fitness gurus said they see people all the time who’ve been inactive for a while.

Iron Ridge, a band that plays traditional bluegrass, country and light gospel, will open the series on Sunday. This will be Iron Ridge’s third time performing in the series, and the band has been a crowd favorite in the past, according to Linda Silfee, program coordinator for the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks.

“They should really go over well, especially for the holiday weekend,” Silfee said.

Liberty High grad heading to Harvard

Considering her once paralyzing fear of being on stage, Kelly Green said it is amazing to reflect on how much she has grown as a performer.

“When I was in fifth grade I did a play at my elementary school and it scared me to death,” Kelly said with a smile. “I was traumatized [at] the time and I never wanted to be on stage again.”

Since then, Kelly has participated in and directed dozens of plays, and next month she will perform on the stages of Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training in Cambridge, Mass.

“I’m so excited to be completely submerged in theater,” Kelly said. “I’m going to eat, drink and sleep theater, and I couldn’t be more excited.”
